BELLY: A Liquor Cabinet with Curves, Character, and Craft

The liquor cabinet is back, and it’s had a makeover. Meet BELLY, the sculptural, sensuous new design by Studio Roderick Vos for ITEM Amsterdam. Part functional bar, part art object, and entirely unexpected, BELLY brings both glamour and a grin to the modern interior.

At first glance, BELLY looks like something out of a design gallery: a smooth, organically shaped monolith that fuses curves with crisp geometry. But open its seamless facade, and it reveals a practical, well-thought-out interior, shelving for bottles and glassware, and a spinning platform in the center (the “belly”) for effortless selection and display.

Crafted from Getacore, an acrylic-based solid surface material, BELLY showcases the beauty of vacuum-forming technology. “I’ve always been fascinated by shaping materials through heat and pressure,” says Roderick Vos. “This project began as a study in plasticity, how far we could push form without compromising function.” The result is a cabinet that feels fluid and weightless, yet sturdy and grounded, with barely a seam in sight.

The soft, flowing shell is available in a wide color palette, making BELLY adaptable to a range of interiors, from clean minimalist spaces to bolder, more eclectic settings. Despite its high design pedigree, BELLY doesn’t take itself too seriously. Vos adds with a smile, “Humor is important too. The shape suggests something else entirely… Who’s been drinking all the liquor?”

Playful, precise, and undeniably eye-catching, BELLY proves that furniture can be both deeply functional and full of personality. It’s not just a storage piece, it’s a conversation starter, a design statement, and, yes, a great excuse to pour a drink.
