From Concrete Shell to Choreographed Space: Folistudio’s Mozaik Showroom in Istanbul

In Istanbul’s Maslak district, a former concrete shell has been reimagined as a spatial framework for design. Turkish architecture practice Folistudio has transformed the Mozaik Design Showroom into a layered, immersive environment, blurring the line between gallery, archive, and exhibition. The space reveals itself through floating mezzanines, sculptural staircases, and gauzy partitions that dissolve boundaries as much as they define them.

Anchored by a raw material palette of concrete, steel, and translucent polycarbonate, the interior is at once monumental and ephemeral. A spiral staircase, wrapping organically around a concrete core, acts as the spatial anchor. Visible through milky partitions, it appears more like a moving sketch than a fixed structure, guiding visitors vertically as much as conceptually.

Light and transparency play central roles. Daylight filters through sheets of translucent glass, while at night, conic table lamps glow softly from within the showroom’s layered core. These fixtures, chosen from Mozaik’s collection, become silhouettes, ghost-like yet familiar, visible from multiple vantage points without ever being fully revealed. It’s a choreography of conceal and reveal, structure and atmosphere.

One standout moment is the pyramid-like miniature display, painted in vivid red, a chromatic interruption in the otherwise muted space. Housing Vitra’s Miniatures Collection, the archive reads as a design reliquary, where scale and nostalgia converge under a bold formal gesture. It’s both centerpiece and pause: a moment to reflect on design as lineage.

Throughout the showroom, objects are not merely placed, they are composed. Each vignette is a deliberate interaction between product, architecture, and viewer. Furniture floats. Lighting hovers. Materials converse. What results is not just a place to view design, but to experience it spatially and emotionally.
